What is Wabi Sabi?

It is a Japanese phrase and concept dating back many centuries. Imperfection is the basic principle of Wabi-Sabi. “Wabi” is said to be defined as “rustic simplicity” and “Sabi” is translated to “taking pleasure in the imperfect.”

I chose this Japanese phrase for my studio because the old rustic barn in which I make my art is a funky and truly imperfect structure. But also Wabi Sabi is a perfect name for the creating we do... taking pleasure in the messy imperfect process of art making. To me Wabi Sabi is also accepting our beautiful imperfect selves with love and reverence.
