The way I make my art journal pages is I journal first and then create on top. Sometimes the journaling informs the work and images to come, and sometimes something else comes. These images have to do with the masterpiece of our lives and our bodies. Especially as women, honoring our aging bodies and being grateful for the complexities of our lives, the mundane and the sacred.

What is Wabi Sabi?

It is a Japanese phrase and concept dating back many centuries. Imperfection is the basic principle of Wabi-Sabi. “Wabi” is said to be defined as “rustic simplicity” and “Sabi” is translated to “taking pleasure in the imperfect.”

I chose this Japanese phrase for my studio because of the old barn that is part of my studio, but also Wabi Sabi is a perfect name for the creating we do. The process of art making can be messy and imperfect. I also love that Wabi Sabi is also about accepting our beautiful imperfect selves with love and reverence.

Here is a short video about the concept of Wabi Sabi if you want to know more.
